The term ‘Photovoltaic’ is derived by combining the Greek word for light, ‘photos’ with volt, the name of the unit of electromotive force- the force that causes the motion of electrons. A solar cell or photovoltaic cell is a device that converts light energy into electrical energy. Sometimes the term solar cell is reserved for devices intended specifically to capture energy from sunlight, while the term photovoltaic cell is used when the light source is unspecified. A solar module is composed of solar cells connected in series and parallel.

There are four basic different types of PV cells namely; Monocrystalline, Polycrystalline, Amorphous and Thin film.

Solar photovoltaics have been widely used in Bangladesh as a stand alone or grid connected system. Country’s first Wind-Solar hybrid power generation unit was installed by Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) at the St. Martin’s Island.
